The Catholic Health Care Association of Southern Africa
Compassionate health care in the service of Christ
CATHCA is governed by a Board of Management which meets four times a year to discuss important health issues, to review progress on goals and financial accounts and to decide on policy and strategy.
A Liaison Bishop from the Southern African Catholic Bishops’ Conference (the SACBC), the Secretary-General of the SACBC and a representative of the Leadership Council of Consecrated Life (LCCL) are ex-officio members. Other members are elected every two years at the Annual General Meeting by CATHCA members. There are presently 10 members of the Board of Management (see button marked ‘Board’).
The Audit and Risk Finance Committee oversees the financial affairs of CATHCA, and meets once a quarter before each Board or EXCO meeting to review the financial accounts and make recommendations to the Board. Monthly financial accounts are prepared by the Finance Officer and reviewed by the Director.
CATHCA staff administer the day-to-day affairs of CATHCA from the national office in Melrose Johannesburg. There are eight staff members (see button marked “staff”), a Director, Administrator, Training Unit Manager, Project Manager, Finance Officer, Pastoral Care Officer, Admin Assistant and Monitoring & Evaluation Officer.
Hospitals, clinics, hospices, home-based care organisations, day care centres and other institutions which are members of CATHCA are all run independently and have their own sources of funding. However, CATHCA helps from time to time with fundraising information and advice, and raises funds for its own office and for special programmes such as the Parish Nurse Programme.
