Expert Team

CATHCA’s national office in Johannesburg is powered by a lean but expert team of six professionals known for their integrity, sector knowledge and commitment to impact. The Executive Director leads the team, ensuring strategic coherence, impactful project management and resource mobilisation. The Finance Officer oversees budgeting, compliance and financial reporting. The Skills Development Officer supports training initiatives and capacity-building across projects. The MEAL Officer drives evidence-based decision-making through rigorous monitoring, evaluation, accountability and learning systems. The Stakeholder Engagement Officer nurtures partnerships and ensures alignment with donors, health authorities and community actors. The Operations Officer manages internal operations while strengthening our organisational voice. With complementary expertise and a shared commitment to health equity, the CATHCA team provides strong, accountable leadership that supports the delivery of grassroots health services across the country and beyond.

Andrea Cortemiglia

Andrea Cortemiglia

Executive Director

Andrea is an experienced development professional with a strong background in leadership, strategy, community-centred health and development work. He holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration, a Master’s Degree in Development, Innovation and Change from universities in Italy, and a Doctorate in Development Studies from the University of South Africa.

Before joining CATHCA in 2020, Andrea worked across grassroots initiatives, international NGOs and government-linked programmes, gaining experience that bridges policy, implementation, organisational leadership and resource mobilisation. He is honoured to serve the CATHCA Network and is deeply committed to supporting Catholic Health Providers in reaching vulnerable communities holistically, while advancing universal health coverage and health justice for all.

 

Bonginkosi Mthembu

Bonginkosi Mthembu

Stakeholder Engagement & Project Management Officer

Bonginkosi joined CATHCA in 2016 as Stakeholder Engagement and Project Management Officer, bringing with him over a decade of experience from the Treatment Action Campaign. During this time, he gained extensive experience in prevention and treatment literacy, community organising, capacity building and national-level skills development initiatives.

He holds a Certificate in Access to Medicine and Intellectual Property Rights, as well as an Advanced Project Management Certificate. Bonginkosi plays a key role in nurturing partnerships and ensuring alignment with donors, health authorities and community actors, while also supporting the planning, coordination and delivery of projects across the network.

 

Tinashe Mandikonza

Tinashe Mandikonza

MEAL & Project Management Officer

Tinashe joined CATHCA in 2015 and brings extensive expertise in Monitoring, Evaluation, Accountability and Learning (MEAL). She holds a Certificate in Monitoring, Evaluation and Social Impact from IQ Business and a Bachelor of Commerce degree in Industrial and Organisational Psychology from the University of South Africa.

Her work focuses on developing and implementing MEAL systems, tools and frameworks that support evidence-based decision-making and learning across projects. Tinashe is also experienced in data collection and analysis, report writing and supporting project management processes, helping ensure that programmes are effective, accountable and continuously improving.

 

Elsa Chinembiri

Skills Development & Project Management Officer

Elsa has been part of the CATHCA team since 2015 and brings a rich blend of academic and practical expertise in community and health psychology and social development. Her work is grounded in a strong commitment to addressing poverty, marginalisation and inequality, particularly in underserved communities.

She is a seasoned social development professional with extensive experience in skills development, safeguarding practices, capacity-building initiatives and the management of complex donor-funded projects. Elsa is skilled in designing innovative projects and training interventions, leading teams, developing training materials and monitoring and reporting on project progress to ensure meaningful and sustainable impact.

 

Shannon Eckstein

Shannon Eckstein

Finance Officer

Shannon joined CATHCA in February 2023 as Finance Officer, bringing more than 15 years of experience in the NGO sector. Prior to this, she worked with organisations including World Vision, Catholic Relief Services, and JAM International, where she built a solid foundation across a range of financial and compliance functions.

Her experience includes serving as a Compliance Officer on assignments across several African countries, including Botswana, Lesotho, Tanzania, Egypt, Kenya, Mozambique, Eswatini and South Sudan. Shannon supports sound financial management, donor compliance and accountability, contributing to the organisation’s sustainability and credibility.

 

Jane Sutherland

Jane Sutherland

Operations Officer

Jane joined CATHCA in July 2016 and plays a central role in the organisation’s day-to-day operations. Her portfolio includes administration, human resources, procurement, office management and communications, helping ensure that internal systems run smoothly while strengthening CATHCA’s organisational voice.

Before joining CATHCA, Jane spent 15 years working in human resources, including nine years as an HR Manager at Sasol Oil. She holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree in Economics and Business Management and brings a wealth of professional experience, organisational insight and institutional memory to the team.
