Companionship: a Catholic Approach to Mental Health Care: currently presented by Deacon Ed Shoener
On July 27, 2024, Johannesburg hosted the Catholic Mental Health Ministry: A Heartfelt Healing Presence Grounded in Companionship, Screenings, and Referrals conference, attracting 68 participants from the dioceses of Klerksdorp, Witbank, Johannesburg, and Bethlehem. The event, conducted in a hybrid format, allowed additional virtual attendees to engage in discussions on critical mental health issues.
The conference began with a session led by the Association of Catholic Mental Health Ministers, who underscored the importance of companionship in mental health care. Speakers emphasized that a compassionate presence is vital for individuals facing mental health challenges, highlighting the transformative power of empathy and emotional support in fostering healing.

Following this, the Foundation for Professional Development presented practical strategies for identifying and addressing mental health issues within communities. Their focus was on equipping community members to recognize signs of mental distress and engage those affected with care.
A pivotal discussion was led by representatives from the Gauteng Department of Health, who stressed the necessity of clear and accessible referral pathways for individuals seeking mental health services. They highlighted the importance of collaboration among the Church, community organizations, and health authorities in creating a comprehensive support network.
Throughout the day, participants engaged in discussions around key themes such as raising awareness about mental health, integrating psychospiritual support into care initiatives, and enhancing community-based mental health screening and referral systems. There was a strong consensus on the need for proactive education to combat stigma and encourage open dialogue.
As the conference concluded, attendees left with a renewed commitment to advancing mental health initiatives in their communities. The event fostered a sense of shared responsibility and collaboration, emphasizing the collective effort needed to support individuals facing mental health challenges. Gratitude was expressed to all speakers and participants, marking a significant step forward in creating a compassionate environment for mental health care.
