The Department of Health (DoH) in the Sub-District of the City of Johannesburg, Region G, hosted a Community Health Awareness Event aimed at promoting healthy lifestyles and empowering community members with essential health information. Service providers and stakeholders were invited to collaborate in raising awareness on key health and wellness topics.
The event sought to educate and create awareness about:
- Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD)
- Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
- Cancer, HIV, and TB
- The importance of regular health check-ups (vitals screening)
- Financial responsibility and wellbeing
Community Engagement
The community attended in large numbers and showed great enthusiasm for the various information and services provided. Participants took part in health screenings, received educational materials, and engaged actively with presenters.
CATHCA played a key role in EDUCATING ATTENDEES ON FASD AND ADHD, focusing particularly on the effects of alcohol on the development of the unborn child.
Community members were eager to learn and asked insightful questions—such as whether traditional alcoholic beverages like Chibuku (carton beer) and umqombothi (African beer) are harmful during pregnancy.
CATHCA representatives clarified that all types of alcohol, regardless of form or cultural origin—whether umqombothi, cider, whisky, wine, or beer—contain ethanol, which can cause severe harm to the developing child. Participants were also informed about the dangers of smoking during pregnancy and its negative effects on both mother and child.
